Rusty matched the space yacht’s trajectory and prepared to don a spacesuit to make the short hop to the other vessel’s airlock.

“Okay, Sergei, remember what I showed you? The sub-routine is all set to run. Sensors will give you ample warning should another ship approach. If they’re hostile, hit this switch and the sequence will initiate. Shields will engage, and weapons will auto-lock on the enemy vessel.”

She motioned to another section of the holo-display. “A dialog box will pop up asking you to confirm before firing commences, just in case it’s a false alarm and they’re friendly. And if things go bad, this button here will engage autopilot with a course pre-set for Earth. Got it?”

Jones looked paler than usual and stared at the holo-screen showing the massive pleasure yacht, his brows knotted together. He didn’t seem to be paying attention. “Whoever owns that pleasure boat must be loaded,” he said in a distant voice. “You’d think they’d have installed better defensive systems, particularly if they’re going to be this far out in the system with kids on board.”

Rusty got to her feet and patted him on the shoulder. “Sit tight and keep an eye on things from here. If the worst happens, then you’ll be on your way to Earth and can disappear before anyone finds you. Keep an active comm line, so you can let me know should trouble come knocking.”

“What happens if I do have to hit the panic button, and the shuttle takes off without you? You’ll be trapped over there all on your own against who knows what.”

She cast him a knowing grin. “Don’t fret about me, I can take care of myself. Remember the creature? If I run into any opposition, they’re the ones who’ll be in for a shock, not me.”

Jones eyed her confident demeanor. “Yeah, but there’s just one thing. Spaceships and monsters don’t mix, even one who’s on your side.”

He interlaced his fingers and cracked his knuckles, sounding like old-fashioned gunfire in the cramped cockpit. “Last thing you want is for the beast accidentally to blast a hole in the hull. You could find yourself floating in vacuum without a helmet—not a nice way to die!”
